From the National Round to the International Final Round AMSIO 2026–2027 consists of three stages: State Round, National Round, and International Final Round. The National Round is expected to take place in March 2027. According to the AMSIO competition structure, the top 60% of participants from the State Round are eligible to advance to the National Round. After the National Round, outstanding students may be nominated to participate in the International Final Round. The national team announcement is expected in April 2027, before the international round takes place in the United States in June 2027. This means that the journey to the international stage does not begin when students arrive in the United States. It starts from the earlier rounds, where students gradually become familiar with new challenges, gain competition experience, and prepare themselves for a wider academic environment.

What Makes the International Final Round Different? The State Round and National Round may be organized in either paper-based or online formats, depending on the arrangements in each country. In comparison, the International Final Round for the 2026–2027 cycle is planned as an in-person event in the United States. Another important difference is that the international round is not limited to the examination itself. The program includes Academic Competition, Cultural Exchange, STEM Workshop, Campus & City Tour, and Gala Awards Ceremony. For students, this means the International Final Round is not simply another competition. It is also an opportunity to step outside their familiar learning environment, meet new people, and experience an international academic community.

  1. Academic Competition The Academic Competition remains the central part of the International Final Round. Students continue to compete in AMSIO subjects including Mathematics, Science, Language, and Computational Intelligence, depending on the subjects they have registered for and their eligibility. After progressing through the earlier stages, the international round gives students another opportunity to test their abilities in an environment that brings together participants from different countries and educational systems. It can also help students see their everyday learning from a broader perspective. The knowledge and skills developed in school are not only useful in classrooms or regular examinations; they can also become the foundation for taking on challenges in an international setting.

  2. Cultural Exchange Alongside the academic competition, students can participate in Cultural Exchange activities, including performances, exhibitions, and opportunities to connect with international peers. For many students, this may be one of their first opportunities to meet and interact directly with peers who speak different languages, come from different cultural backgrounds, and study in different education systems. Not every memorable moment has to happen inside the examination room. A conversation, a group activity, or a cultural exchange session may help students learn more about the world and become more confident when communicating in an international environment. In this way, AMSIO creates more than a space for comparing competition results. Students also have the chance to connect, share experiences, and build friendships with peers from around the world.

  3. STEM Workshop The International Final Round also features a STEM Workshop, where students can take part in hands-on activities related to science and technology. It adds a more interactive element to the international experience, giving participants the chance to explore STEM beyond the competition itself. Rather than focusing only on exam performance, the workshop allows students to engage with scientific and technological topics through practical activities. Together with the academic competition, cultural exchange, campus visits, and other activities, it helps make the International Final Round a broader learning experience for students from different countries.

  4. Campus & City Tour During the International Final Round, students are also expected to take part in a Campus & City Tour, which includes guided visits to universities and landmarks in the United States. Seeing a university campus, learning environment, and surrounding community in person can offer a very different experience from simply viewing photos or videos online. For students, these visits may provide a clearer picture of international education and broaden their understanding of future learning opportunities. A visit does not have to lead immediately to a decision about university or career plans. Sometimes, experiencing a new environment is enough to encourage students to think more deeply about what they want to study, where they hope to go, and what goals they would like to pursue.

  5. Gala Awards Ceremony After the competition and other activities, the Gala Awards Ceremony marks one of the final milestones of the International Final Round. At the international stage, AMSIO recognizes student achievement through Gold Medals, Silver Medals, and Bronze Medals, while International Certificates are provided to International Final Round participants. The competition also includes special awards such as the Excellence Cup, Champion Cup, and National Team Cup for individuals or teams that meet the relevant criteria. Medals are certainly an important part of the competition. However, the Gala Awards Ceremony is also an opportunity for students to look back on the entire journey they have completed, from the first round to the international stage.

More Than a Medal When people think about an international competition, medals and rankings are often the first things that come to mind. However, the AMSIO International Final Round offers students a much broader experience. They have the opportunity to: challenge themselves in an international academic competition; meet students from different countries; participate in cultural exchange activities; join science and technology workshops; visit universities and landmarks in the United States; attend the Gala Awards Ceremony with the international AMSIO community. As a result, what students take home from the International Final Round may go far beyond a competition result. It can include new friendships, first-time experiences, a broader view of education, and greater motivation for the goals they want to pursue in the future.

Conclusion AMSIO connects students, schools, and educators across more than 20 countries on five continents. The International Final Round therefore becomes a meeting point where students from different educational backgrounds can come together, exchange ideas, and experience an international academic environment. Moving from the National Round to the International Final Round is not simply about advancing to a higher stage of competition. Students also have the opportunity to challenge themselves in a new environment, meet international peers, participate in STEM activities, experience cultural exchange, and explore educational settings in the United States. Each of these experiences can become a meaningful part of their personal and academic journey. For this reason, reaching the international stage does not have to be only about asking, “What medal will I win?” Another valuable question may be: “What will I learn when I step onto a bigger stage?” The International Final Round gives each student the opportunity to discover their own answer.
